5 Feared Dead & 33 Missing as Rescue Continues
5 people are feared dead when the boat with 62 including crew members, capsized in the Godavari river near Devipatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday afternoon, as per official reports.
33 are still missing while 24 have been rescued after the accident, East Godavari Superintendent of Police, Adnan Nayeem Asmi had informed earlier.
Two 30 member NDRF teams were dispatched to the spot, according to relief and rehabilitation department officials.
A chopper has been deployed to locate the boat.
The Godavari river has been in spate on account of the floods for over a week.
Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, is assessing the situation.
He has directed local ministers and MLAs to oversee relief efforts.
Two rescue boats of the AP Tourism Department have been rushed to the spot.
The chief minister has initiated the revocation of licences of all boats being operated in the Godavari river.
He has instructed the administrators to conduct a detailed inspection of all the boats which ply in the river.
Tourism Minister Muthamsetty Srinivasa Rao said the overturned boat didn t have an authorisation of the Tourism Department, but had clearance from Kakinada Port authorities.
State home minister M Sucharita said stern action would be taken against the officials who had granted the clearance for the boat in question.
Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu have requested their party workers to take part in rescue efforts.
